A22 Tolls Plan on hold

The plans to introduce tolls on the A22 motorway have been postponed until some time after a new government is elected in June. The reason given by the Portuguese government is that it would be unconstitutional to implement the tolls under a temporary government. Protesters continue to fight against any future decision to introduce tolls in the Algarve. We'll keep you posted on any new information that transpires.

Tolls Introduced on the A22 in Portugal

The A22 motorway, which stretches across the Algarve, will be subject to charges from 15 April this year. Overhead gantries will work electronically to debit a device placed on the dashboard of vehicles and there will be signs prior to joining the A22 advising road users that it is a Portagem Exclusivamente Electronicos which means Exclusively Electronic Tolls. Information on exactly how this will operate for visitors to the area is unclear at the moment, but any further information we can obtain will be posted here to keep you up to date.
